Do Now · Wed Oct 7
Open your Chromebook.
After Karpathy on Monday and the Chiang reading on Tuesday — what’s one thing you’re still thinking about?
Write 2-3 sentences in your notebook. Silent work. 5 minutes.
Where we are
Day three of three.
- Mon — Karpathy, the builder. What a model IS. From someone who makes them.
- Tue — Chiang, the skeptic. What it DOES to language and to writing. From someone who writes.
- Today — Klein & Winthrop, the outsiders. What any of it means for SCHOOL and for YOU. From a journalist and an education researcher.
Then fall break starts. That’s the arc.
Today’s work
Listen. Fill. Submit.
- I play the conversation at the front of the room. You can’t open YouTube on your Chromebook — it’s blocked. The audio only runs from the projector.
- You open the form on your Chromebook. Link next slide.
- I pause at 6 listen-for moments. At each one, you fill the matching item on the form.
- Submit before the bell. That’s your record for today.
Why Klein × Winthrop
You’ve heard what the machine is. And what it does to language. Now — what does it do to you?
Rebecca Winthrop is an education researcher at Brookings. She has four categories of students (passenger, achiever, resister, explorer). She’s been thinking about agency and school longer than you’ve been in it.
Ezra Klein is a journalist. His job today is to push her, ask follow-ups you’d want to ask.
This is the day the week aims at. Pay attention to anything that lands for you — and anything that doesn’t.
Open the form
Go to this URL on your Chromebook:

Open Week 10 → Wednesday → click the Klein × Winthrop form button.
If the button isn’t clickable yet, Mr. Muggivan will project the direct Google URL on the board.
Before we start
Three rules.
- Audio only comes from the front of the room. YouTube is blocked on your Chromebook anyway — don’t try to pull it up yourself.
- Chromebook on the form only. Locked Mode.
- No AI on the responses. You’ve seen the whole week. YOUR take.
Submit before the bell. Then enjoy fall break. See you Wednesday Oct 14.
